Behind The Scenes: Chic & Contemporary Styled Shoot at Slate in Downtown St. Louis

It’s #WeddingWednesday and I’m so excited to share these amazing photos that I just got back from my good friend and wedding photographer, Bri Whitman of Bri Whitman Photography.

In February, she asked me to create an invitation suite to be included in this inspiration shoot happening at one of St. Louis’ newest event spaces, Slate. Slate is located in Downtown St. Louis and is owned by the Bailey family. If you’re from the area and know anything about the local St. Louis restaurant scene, you’ll know that the Bailey group owns some of the best and most popular food destinations in the city; ranging from Bailey’s Range—a burger and milkshake bar downtown to Small Batch—a restaurant that specializes in whiskeys and vegetarian fare, and a couple brunch spots in between. Recently they branched out into special event venues and own both Willow and their sister space Slate, both located on Locust in the heart of Downtown St. Louis.

Slate is light, bright, and a blank slate (ha, get it) to make your wedding dreams come true. This corner space features floor to ceiling windows on two sides, allowing in a ton of natural light during the day and makes you feel like you’re enjoying the bustle of the city at night. Slate is the perfect backdrop to create your ideal wedding vision and during this weekend in February, we transformed the space into a chic and contemporary reception space for this shoot. Featuring lots of cool blues and greens, this shoot is equal parts classic and modern and will provide a lot of inspiration for anyone planning a frosty, wintery wedding.

The idea for the invitation design came from the calming color palette that Bri had sent me to work with. With the cool blues and sages, I knew I wanted to work with a watercolor design. Pairing it with a fluid brush calligraphy style text made the suite feel laid-back, but at the same time modern and fresh. I wanted to up the luxury feel of the design, though, so I printed the invitation details on translucent vellum.

Vellum is gaining in popularity with invitation suites now, and with good reason. Whether your wedding details are being printed on it, or you’re using it as a sleeve for your invitation suite, vellum adds a sense of luxury and fine art to your finished designs.

Rouge Events and Design really wowed with the styling and florals for the shoot. Katie really brought to life the chic, wintery tones through the tablescape and bouquet styling. I was absolutely wowed by the faux fur that her and her team incorporated in, as well as all the greenery included. The tablescape and styling felt fresh, modern, and perfect to bring together the overall look of the shoot.
